This Was Better Than Christmas Or My Birthday

February 9, 2015

A package arrived on my doorstep last Friday. It was from Palo Alto Speedometer. Inside were my 1967 Porsche 912 gauges lovingly, meticulously and painstakingly refurbished.

Opening that box, I felt like a little kid again. I wanted to sleep with them that night but my wife wisely said no.

They came out really, really well. I can’t wait to see them back in the car.

Jalopnik writes the Porsche Carrera GT that took the life of Paul Walker last weekend is “not a car to mess with”. A former Porsche manager called it the “most dangerous car on the road.”

Porsche test driver and legend Walter Rohrl was scared of it and noted that it probably needed (and did not get) traction control after he completed a white-knuckle lap at speed in the rain at Nurburgring.

Jay Leno was oh so lucky after spinning a CGT out at Talledega.

What no one says is that it’s unsafe, poorly engineered or should not be driven. Graham Rahal said it was probably the finest road car ever made, but has to be treated with respect.

Whether it’s a Porsche Carrera GT, a gracefully aging M3 on a twisty Wisconsin road or even a pickup truck just going to the lumber yard, respect is the key word. We can’t take any vehicle for granted or forget what they can do to us – if we daydream.

If I was handed the keys to a Carrera GT? I’d definitely take one for a spi…a drive. Respectfully.

It’s hypnotic. You can’t stop watching.

Here is a video of 50 supercars entering the M6 tollway somewhere in the UK after a charity event of some sort (does it matter?). After 30 seconds or so we get bored with many web videos, but you end up watching this one to the very end…we were completely transfixed.

Pristine Day at Road America

October 18, 2010

Crisp, clear and lots of track time

Last weekend found over 150 drivers enjoying some late season letter-perfect weather at Road America. There was plenty to look at and listen to, from a plethora of Porsches, a bushel of BMW’s, lots of Lotuses, volumes of Vipers…you get the picture. There was even a Jack Daniels NASCAR racer zooming around the track.

Lots of great metal at the track

This was another professional event put on by the great folks at MVP Track Time ( ). This was the first event at Road America for this group, and it won’t be the last.

Cars, brats and women. Is anything else necessary?

Yes, it was another beautiful day at Elkhart Lake. Certainly not as hot, or crowded, but the Gearbox Cafe was open for business and the driving was plentiful.

A FuelFed Logo Spied

There was even an embarassing Fuelfed logo sighting (appears to be stolen)…All in all another great trip to Road America.
