The Pain of the Hunt!

December 17, 2014

1988_AMG Hammer

Long before Bring a Trailer, eBay or Craigslist, we were always combing the media channels to find interesting deals to share with those with-in our car circles. AutoTrader, Deals on Wheels and occasionally Pioneer Press locals were the tools of the hunt. Currently Bring a Trailer has emerged as the leader in interesting cars with readers contributing 1000s of cars for sale each today. Of course BaT big premiums for selling/buying keep most as voyeurs.

Well, as very seasoned hunters, we have our little tricks. One happens to be an app we’ve tweaked that will allow us to search EVERYTHING online with specific parameters. Talk about a big time-suck distraction! We usually hunt for realistic buys that appeal to our Fuelfed patina-driver sensibilities. Now keep in mind that the real car hunter still has an eye on every driveway, dealer lot and garage door as he drives about his daily business.

Recently, our little app scooped this gem up out of tiny rural White Pigeon, MI.

The ad reads:
1988 Benz 300 V8. Charcoal w/black leather. 68k miles. Runs, but needs tune-up. $2200 obo.

The smart hunter knows if there’s a phone number, don’t waste time sending a text or email…call!

And call we did. The seller stated it was his father-in-laws pride and joy he imported from Germany back in 1989. It had “special hot-rod enhancements”. When the father-in-law passed in 1998, the car and sailboat went into the grandparents storage barn. Keeping our cards close to the chest, we dare not reveal what the car truly is, but simply ask for the vin and set up a time we can drive (3 hours) to see it.

Due diligence must now ensue. We validated the vin as a 1988 300 that had been imported from Affalterbach, Germany … AMG GmbH! Yes, it was a true ultra rare AMG Hammer as we had hoped! A call to the great AMG engine master John Hadek in Indianapolis gave us great insight on the modified 560 V8 and what rebuild costs might run (just in-case).

Cash in hand (mandatory), we call ahead before we depart. No answer. Two days go by before we finally make contact again. Unfortunately, the car sold to a local kid who will surely kill it unknowing of what a great motoring icon he had scored.

Oh the painful roller-coaster ride that addicts the true car hunter to the chase!

FFotW: 1983 Modified MK1 Jetta Turbo Diesel

October 27, 2014

Posted: 10.27.14

Here we go. The ultra rare MK1 VW Jetta Turbo Diesel. This one fits nicely into the Fuelfed spirit of understated performance. Don’t be fooled, as this sleeper has been correctly modified and should pull like a freight train and still get 50 mpg. Hell, it even has a Fuelfed sticker on the back! Too bad the BBS wheels don’t come with it, but the price is more than fair for this very rare classic.

Ad reads:

1983 Modified Jetta Turbo Diesel

PLEASE NOTE THE EURO BBS RM WHEELS ARE NOT INCLUDED WITH THE CAR. Car comes with GTI Snowflakes. Factory black paint. Grey/black tweed interior. 5 speed. No sunroof. No radio. AC. 93k miles. No Rust. No winters. This very rare factory turbo car is faster than a 16v GTI and gets 52 mpg at the same time!

Bought the car in 2008 replaced the following:

• clutch & cable
• all fluids and filters
• timing belt
• water pump
• belts
• glow plugs.
• front struts & rear shocks with Boges
• GTI sport springs & GTI front calipers, rotors, drums, brake cylinders, brake lines
• ball joints
• wheel bearings
• rebuilt injection pump

In Fall of 2009 we put the car into storage. Fall 2014 we recommissioned the car with a complete detail to the paint. Changed the oil & filter with 5w40 Rotella synthetic & new fuel filter. Drained the diesel fuel and replenished with fresh. Now the heater blower motor does not work. We have a new blower motor that comes with car. The heat and AC worked great before storage. There is a crack in the paint on the roof above the rear window that was there when we bought it (see pic). We’ve kept grease on it so it would’t rust. Otherwise, the body is in excellent condition.

We prefer to sell this very car to an classic car enthusiast who will maintain cherish it as all the previous owners have. Comes with extra Euro tail lights and front Hellas.

$3400. The car is located in Chicago.

FFotW: 1984 Euro BMW 745i 5 Speed

August 6, 2014

Posted 8.5.14

We’ve driven these up at Union Grove as drag cars and crushed feeble muscle cars and turbo Jap cars in our wake. But we never had one where we could change our own gears when we wanted. With the classic European car market booming and everyone scrambling for patina’d Alfa’s, this 745i is entreé into the rarified arena of understated Q cars. Add the correct mods and 5 speed like this one and now you’re the sledge hammer.

Our seller states:

1984 BMW E23 745i Sedan M30 European Model (Grey Market) Garaged kept and stored.
The e23 745i was never sold in the US, so every one of them is a gray-market import; in this case the car was originally purchased by our father (original owner) who really wanted one and went to extreme lengths to purchase, import and federalize the car.
The 745i was also sold only with an automatic transmission; this car is converted to 5-speed. Conversions: Dinan Hop up kit which includes the following: an over sized T04 Garrett turbo charger, high performance camshaft, custom manifold and stainless steel exhaust to adapt to T04 turbo, K&N air intake & filter, K&N full kit air and fuel ratio monitors, larger fuel injectors, Electronic ignition retard, Haltech electronic fuel injection EFI-F3, Bosch 132, 5PSI fuel pump, lowered fully independent adjustable 4 wheel suspension, and BBS RS3 wheels ($3300.00) and much much more…… Odometer Mileage 287157 (Kilometer) 178431 (Miles) on the body. There’s about 25,000 on the motor since rebuild.

This 745i is located in the Detroit area.

FFotW: 1980 Koenig 500sl $7000

Posted 7.1.2014

Hold your judgements right there.

Yes, it’s a very, very, very, odd piece of kit from an era that would make Don Johnson proud. And why would one want to ruin a 107 bodied Mercedes? First, this is not some Bradley GT-like body kit add-on, but a creative (in a German way) flamboyancy that could only happen in the early 1980’s. Regardless, this a tuner time-piece that has to be accepted for what it is. That said, this is a real deal Koening Tuning super car that packs a stomping (for 1982) 350hp in it’s supercharged v8. Original LSD, full Koening leather power sport seats, quick steering rack, BBS wheels, Nardi wheel, etc…

We’ve been watching this particular car for months now and it could be an interesting investment, way ahead of the curve or at the very least, something that will surely get all the attention any where it’s driven. Park next to the Corvettes and show them what a real v8 can do. Make sure to wear your Members Only jacket and Reeboks.

Do you research on Koening first. Some info on Koenig here.

The car is located in Joliet, IL 815.725.0850

FFotW: 1965 Porsche 356C

May 15, 2014

Well this one found us via FFG100 founder Rick G. Yes, it’s his personal car which we’ve all seen and admired at Coffee & Classics® over the years. With concours restored 356s hitting the stratosphere and patina cars right behind, this $61k gem represents a smart investment that you won’t be afraid to actually use regularly.

Rick’s Description:

1965 Porsche 356C, A Great Driving Very Original Touring Car . . . or the solid, rust free foundation for your dream 356 concours winning project!

This is the dream Porsche 356 C – a comfortable, great running Coupe. A fun, easy driver to go on everything from a local Cruise Night or Club Car Show to a trip around the Upper Penninsula or that fantasy cross country Route 66 run. For sale by a long time 356 owner and 356 vintage racer. My third 356 and 28th year as an owner and PCA member.

The last – and arguably BEST – year of this car, a 1965 model. And this rare example is a once-in-a-lifetime find: Bought from the second owner with just over 23,000 miles on the clock, it”s not exactly a “Barn Find” – its a “Storage Unit Find” from the dry, arid part of the country in Oklahoma. Stored the last eight years, it has been carefully and lovingly returned to service.

The front trunk and engine compartment are nicely detailed to original appearance and are very presentable. Everything has an appropriate, correct and unmolested look.

The car drives nicely and the trans shifts smooth as silk. The disc brakes are a pleasure. The correct C engine has no serial number, an indication of a dealer replacement part from the day. The Weber carbs have been gone completely thru and run very well. The entire fuel system was replaced from fuel tank to correct hose and clamps.

The body is a rare solid body. The Ivory color was sprayed back in the 70’s and is showing its age in terms of a bit of crazing here and there, but looks very presentable. A bare metal paint job was also the timne of the addition of the sunroof clip from another 356, a common addition at that time. When you are ready to restore or upgrade the car then you can decide to maintain the current Ivory or restore to the original Slate Grey. Either looks great!

Electrical system has been gone thru and the original 6v is fully functional. Upgraded to an Optima Gel battery which adds reliable starting, yet undetectable in a “cloaking device” case. The addition of a modern flasher unit makes all lights flash and work appropriately. Interior and dash lights all work properly. The starter has been rebuilt along with the correct AM-FM-Marine Blaupunkt radio.

Being an affordable C Coupe here is an opportunity to own the 356 you’ve always dreamed of. If you’ve been watching the prices ratchet up there is no time like the present. The Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is included and shows the car manufactured as a 1964 car, titled as a 1965. This was common at the time to title the car when sold, not manufactured. Here are some more features:

  • Solid, Dry Oklahoma Car – last 8 years in storage
  • Approx 23,000 original miles
  • One repaint – early 70″s – current factory color Ivory.
  • Original Color per VIN 218739 Slate Grey
  • Correct C engine has no serial number: dealer case replacement
  • Aluminum TIG weld of crack at base of oil cooler on engine case – correct proper repair.
  • Sunroof has not been opened since lovingly brought out of storage. Note: not originally a sunroof coupe, this sunroof was added as a clip from a donor 356. Not an aftermarket unit.
  • Disc Brakes, Trans, Engine complete recent service
  • 6V system – Optima Gel battery upgrade with “cloaking device – all lights work
  • Excellent Chrome: including wheels, sport luggage rack
  • Recent Rebuilds: AM-FM-Marine correct radio, starter, carbs, petcock and tank sender.
  • Weber 40 IDF carbs
  • New correct fuel line, clamps and fuel tank
  • Much fresh rubber and seals
  • Red Leatherette Interior
  • Rare horn trim ring and ashtray options
  • Battery box correctly repaired
  • Heater boxes are also original and the heater puts out good heat.
  • Owner”s manuals, Lots of dealer receipts and many original parts
  • Certificate of Authenticity included.

FFotW: 1991 BMW 850CSI…6 Speed

March 26, 2014

Posted 3.25.14

Now here’s a rare find sent in by Andy D. our Citroen expert. Why he was looking at BMWs, we never know, but we’ll take this one. The car appears to be repainted OE silver and needs some kind of “work”. But hey, if this can be sorted properly, a rare 6 speed hooked to a v12 all aluminum block should prove to be collectible and a hoot to flog.

FFotW: Audi Allroad, 6 Speed: $4500

February 11, 2014

Probably one of 50 6-speed Audi Allroads in the US. Since ALL Allroads will have their auto trans fail, this rare beast represents a significant improvement in durability with rowing the gears yourself. The horrible self-leveling suspension has already been ditched for the traditional set-up. These beasts can be tuned into the ultimate Q-ship that can go anywhere.

The smart enthusiast will snatch this up.

The ad states:

Solid Audi Allroad always maintained per factory schedule. Runs strong with normal wear on an 11 year vehicle. All options except navigation. Heated front and back seats, powered driver seat with memory for 3 drivers, Bose stereo, power moonroof, pass through ski bag, airbags front and side, programmable garage opener, rare manual 6 speed, summer and winter mats, etc. Added locking roof racks and ski/snowboard racks, aftermarket Sirius satellite radio.

No rust, but some exterior scratches and damaged front valence/fog light assembly. I have replaced the factory adjustable air shocks with conventional shocks (far more reliable, but a slightly stiffer ride).

This is a great, comfortable and reliable car ideal for winter climates with Audi’s superb Quattro all wheel drive. I’d keep it if I had another stall in my garage.
