BMW’s Area 51

by
Avid BMW enthusiast and big Fuelfed supporter Jean T. sent us this little insider information.

Various sources, Automobile among them, report that BMW recently opened up “Area 51,” its biggest secret test facility in Miramas, in the South of France, to a select group of M customers for the first time. The Miramas facility, once owned by Michelin, features miles of high-speed banked asphalt; when journalists are allowed into the facility, their cell phones get tape over the camera lenses.

Along with all the M models on track were an M3 GTS and an M3 GT4, plus a number of BMW test drivers to show where the limits are.

As one M customer said, “This is an experience; you can have all the money in the world, but you can’t come here.” Judging by the response of the participants, this is an unforgettable experience.

In case you’re wondering, Miramas is about 50 miles north of Marseille, between Arles (think Van Gogh) and Aix-en-Provence.
